The Sankt-Katharina-Kirche is the Protestant church of the village Altenrode in Saxony-Anhalt , which belongs to the city of Ilsenburg and the Ilsenburg district of Darlingerode .

architecture

The plastered church made of quarry stone probably dates back to the 12th century. The lower wall parts of the nave and in particular four relatively high windows on the north side of the nave date from the Romanesque period . The upper parts of the walls were renewed in later times. To the north of the nave there is an extension with a pent roof. In its eastern part there are remains of the old sacristy , to the west an entrance hall. To the west of the nave there is a church tower, the square base of which, however, only reaches the height of the nave and has an unusually shaped, hexagonal bell storey of more recent date. The tower structure is clad with slate . On the east side of the nave there is a semicircular apse , which was only built in 1876.

Interior design

The interior of the church is spanned by a flat wooden ceiling supported by slender wooden supports. The gallery , dating from 1594, extends over three sides and juts out like a box on the west side. The polygonal wooden pulpit is dated to the beginning of the 17th century and is decorated with reliefs of the four evangelists. The organ and parapet were built in the first half of the 19th century.

In the church there is a small three-wing carved shrine, which was created around 1500 in a local workshop. Four apostles are represented in it. On the left wing there is a representation of Saints George and Antonius. The right wing shows pictures of Anna herself and a bishop.

The floor of the church contains slabs of roe stone of various sizes , which are filled with plaster, so that a mosaic-like appearance is created. There is a castle covering on the right in the anteroom. On the left there is a high paving made of roe stone. Both could go back to the 13th century. The church bell dating back to the 13th century is remarkable.
