Church building

St. Mary's Church is Helsingborg's oldest church. The first church on this site was built in the 12th century in Romanesque style . In the 15th century it was replaced by a three-nave brick church in the Gothic style . When the new church was built, sandstone blocks from the older structure were used in the ambulatory and in the western part of the building. The St. Mary's Church is a so-called pseudo - basilica , as it has a raised central nave, which is not so high that it offers space for the upper aisle . The stepped gable tower was added in the 16th century. In the 19th century, the previous lead roof was replaced by a roof made of copper . In 1843 the armory and the sacristy on the north facade of the church were demolished when the church was being restored according to plans by Carl Georg Brunius . The sacristy was rebuilt in 1953 using the old sacristy as a model.

In the 13th century, St. Mary's Church was one of the largest churches in Denmark .

Today it is a listed building .
