Sant Francesc
Sant Francesc is a basilica on Plaça de Sant Francesc in Palma , Mallorca , to which a monastery belongs. The basilica and convent were declared a protected cultural asset in 1981 .
history
The basilica dates from the reign of James II. , When the Franciscans in 1281 one here Convention in gothic built style. The church was later expanded and the structure improved by replacing the beams with a cross vault. The facade, which is now baroque, dates from the 17th century. The interior of the church consists of a single nave, divided into eight sections with side chapels and pointed arches. The church is the largest in the Balearic Islands after Palma Cathedral . Behind the altar with its baroque altarpiece is the Gothic tomb of the famous Ramon Llull . This tomb was built by Francesc Sagrera in 1480. The Gothic cloister consists of 115 columns with folded pointed arches that enclose a trapezoidal floor plan. The northern gallery was built first, the southern one was not finished until the 15th century. The chronology of the individual styles is clearly visible. In the middle of the courtyard there are still remains of an old well. In front of the Basilica of Sant Francesc there is a monument to the Franciscan Junípero Serra , a missionary .
organ
The organ consists of a historical case that was built in the 16th to 18th centuries and once stood in the St. Francis Church in Palma de Mallorca. The prospect pipes and the Spanish trumpets, which were built by Jordi Bosch in 1772, have also been preserved from the historical instrument. The organ work was created by the organ builder Gerhard Grenzing. Historical organs in Mallorca served as a model. The instrument has 55 registers on three manuals and a pedal .
