action

The widowed caretaker Lucie lives alone with her hamster Hansi - named after her deceased husband - in a community building in Vienna. Her friends Hilde, who owns a restaurant, and Lisa, a housewife neglected by her husband, are her partners when they regularly play DKT in Hilde's bar.

When Lisa wins a trip to Venice for two people and her husband does not want to come because of business matters, she invites Hilde to come along. Lucie is a little offended because she was not invited, as she spent her honeymoon in Venice in 1928. On the spur of the moment, she plundered her meager savings and registered with the bus company for the trip. Hilde and Lisa are astonished when Lucie shows up with her wedding suitcase on the bus departure. Hamster Hansi is inside, but nobody is allowed to know.

The trip is a little adventure for all three women: Hilde approaches the young chauffeur Friedl Gruber without hesitation, who, however, is expected in Venice by his lover Monica and his child. Lisa is courted by the Venetian dealer Alfredo, who offers her Murano glass chandeliers, and spends a romantic evening and night with him. Lucie is desperately looking for the hotel where she spent her wedding night.

Hilde's adventure ends badly when Monica catches her with Friedl in her room. Lisa deliberately refrains from meeting the charming Alfredo a second time. Lucie finally finds the hotel, which, however, has gone from being a staid hotel to a dump for freaks. Overjoyed, she toasted this success with Hilde. The following morning she does not appear to leave and is found dead in her room by the chauffeur.

The vacated space on the bus can now be taken by Monica and Friedl's child. Lisa takes pity on the little hamster and brings it home to her astonished husband as a souvenir from the trip. Hilde is now ready to get involved in the relationship with her boyfriend Fritz, Lucie is sorely missed by her neighbor.

criticism

“The attraction of the story does not lie in turbulent events, but in the contemplative, vivid, detailed-pointed description of a journey in which every person, every reaction, every bitterness is" right ", and that is because the actors are not fictional figures of spongy Are »international«, but rather closely observed representatives of a certain city, a certain milieu.
