Dietrich Lohmann
Dietrich Lohmann (born March 9, 1943 in Schnepfenthal , Thuringia , † November 13, 1997 in Duarte , California , USA) was a German cameraman .
Life
Dietrich Lohmann grew up in Berlin, where he graduated from high school. He received his training as a camera assistant at the technical college for optics and photo technology . In 1967 he became assistant to cameraman Thomas Mauch and worked in this role on several early productions of New German Films .
In Ula Stöckl's directorial debut, Neun Leben hat die Katzen , Lohmann made his debut as a cameraman in a feature film alongside Thomas Mauch. In the following years Lohmann became one of the most important cameramen of the New German Cinema, whose style he decisively shaped. In the beginning, Rainer Werner Fassbinder in particular often worked with him. Initially filming in black and white, his later color shots also remained coolly reserved, often seemingly amateurishly incorrectly exposed and not following the ostensible plot.
From 1971 he taught as a lecturer at the German Film and Television Academy Berlin and at the documentary department of the University of Television and Film Munich . Since 1978, Lohmann has been behind the camera, especially for Austrian television, especially for the episodes of Peter Patzak's crime series parody Kottan .
In 1986 he was selected as a cameraman for the 12-part American television series Firestorm and Ashes ( War and Remembrance ), which made him a name in the American film world. In 1990 he settled in Los Angeles and shot some Hollywood productions there such as Deep Impact (1998). This film, which also became his most famous film, was his last work in his career. Dietrich Lohmann died shortly afterwards of leukemia, which he got while working in the film, before the film was finally completed and shown, three weeks after he had finally finished his work in the film. In memory of his work, Dietrich Lohmann was honored accordingly in the film after his death.
He was married and had a daughter.
