history

The earliest mention of a previous church comes from 1181. This was replaced in 1421 by a first phase of the current church, which was extended in 1469 with a second nave to the south. At the beginning of the 17th century, the church received another aisle on the north side and was extended under the direction of Paolo Micheli from Gandini. Work began in 1623 and, after slowing down due to the plague wave of 1630, was completed with the construction of the large dome by Giovan Maria Bettera in 1640. The basilica was consecrated on September 13, 1654 by the Gandino-born Bishop of Parma, Carlo Nembrini, Santa Maria Assunta.

description

The facade, made of local stone with a warm intensity, encompasses the naves of the different centuries. It is divided into three bodies by pilasters. In front of the entrance there is a portal by the Venetians Domenico Rossi and Antonio Cavalleri with decorative figures. The statues of zoomorphic figures were made by Paolo Callolo and Paolo Groppelli in Rovinj -Stein. The 74 meter high bell tower is the highest bell tower in the Serio Valley and ends with an onion dome of Central European origin; its 13 meter high copper helmet was created by the Bolzano artist Francesco Shgraffer and the Trentino Paolo Sterzl. The bell tower rings out 10 bells from the years 1706 to 1822.
