The Church of Santa Maria Maggiore (also known as Collegiata ) is located in Spello, in the province of Perugia .

history

The church was built on the remains of an earlier pagan temple dedicated to the gods Juno and Vesta . Later it was dedicated to the Nativity and then to the Madonna and given to the Abbey of San Silvestro di Collepino, run by a Camaldolese community. In 1159 the leadership passed to the diocesan clergy and had considerable real estate assets. Construction was completed in the second half of the 13th century.

In the 15th century the church experienced a period of great autonomy and prosperity, during which the high altar was also consecrated (1513), the mesa was restored and the restoration was completed.

architecture

The church is divided into two parts: on the right is the main building, now inhabited by the parish priest , and on the left, the Palace of the Canons (1522), which now houses the Pinacoteca Civica di Spello. The church itself consists of a single nave in the plan of a Latin cross .

The nave ends in a polygonal apse . The ceiling consists of a ribbed vault . It also has a beautiful majolica floor from Deruta (second half of the 16th century). The original facade from the 13th century was completely rebuilt around the middle of the 17th century. The interior has many baroque elements, including an altar.

The church was equipped with numerous chapels , most of which are now closed and walled up. Visible are: the Baglioni Chapel , with frescoes by Pinturicchio , the Sacrament Chapel (with a painting by Pinturicchio) and two others at the ends of the transept .
