year Residents source
1992 2 605 census
2001 2 999 census
2012 4 332 census

Due to the population distribution that has evolved over time, the region has a significant proportion of the Aymara population; in the municipality of Santiago de Huari, 45.1 percent of the population speak the Aymara language .

economy

The population lives mainly from the cultivation of the staple foods quinoa , potatoes and beans , which is only practiced extensively due to the sandy and nutrient-poor soil and is almost exclusively used for self-sufficiency. Fishing in the nearby Poopó Lake is no longer possible, as the water in the lake is highly polluted by the sewage from the tin mines and the water volume of the lake has decreased significantly due to climate changes.
