Santo António da Serra is a municipality ( freguesia ) in the district ( concelho ) of Santa Cruz , in the northeast of the Portuguese island of Madeira . On June 30, 2011 the community had 936 inhabitants in an area of 14.8 km².
The municipality lies with another part in the Machico district , where it forms another administrative municipality. It is also listed there as Santo António da Serra . As the only municipality in two districts, it is unique in the administrative structure of Portugal .
Santo António da Serra is internationally known for its golf course.
history
Zarco , the newcomers to the island of Madeira, landed in 1419 in Machico. This was followed by the settlement of the area, which ran slowly from the coast into the interior of the island. From the early 16th century onwards, settlers settled in what is now the municipality. In the 17th century Santo António da Serra became an independent municipality.
In 1836 the municipality of Água de Pena was dissolved and Santo António da Serra was incorporated. The parishes were separated again in 1848 , and in 1852 some localities Santo António da Serras and Machicos were assigned to the Santa Cruz district. This led to dissatisfaction among the residents, whereupon in 1862 the boundaries of the counties and communities of Machico and Santa Cruz , which are still valid today, were established. Since then, the area of the municipality of Santo António da Serra has been divided into two parts, divided into Machico and Santa Cruz.
The Scottish doctor Robert Kalley settled here in the 19th century . Mostly he treated the people of the community for free. In doing so, however, he tried to spread Protestantism . The population, then as now, was strongly attached to Catholicism , and so there were indictments. Some of Kalley's employees were then arrested and the doctor himself had to leave the island.

Santo António da Serra is a unique exception in the administrative structure of Portugal , as the municipality is in two districts. For this purpose, it is officially recorded separately and managed in two independent municipal areas, each differentiated by the addition of the district to the name.
