Santo Cristo , officially Portuguese Município de Santo Cristo , is a small community in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul . It is 516 km from the capital, Porto Alegre , near the border with Argentina . The population was 14,378 in the 2010 census, the population was estimated to fall slightly on July 1, 2018 to 14,300 inhabitants who live in a community area of around 367 km².

history
Santo Cristo was formerly known as Colônia Boa Vista , it was in the catchment area of the Jesuit reductions of the Guaraní . It was a traditional settlement area of the Guaranís before the whites , the river was named Rio Santo Cristo and in 1932 the settlement became the Distrito de Santo Cristo of the municipality of Santo Angelo , then it was administered by Santa Rosa and gained independence on January 28, 1955 by outsourcing as a self-governing municipality. Functional as a city, the place was only on January 1, 1956. Since 2001, the municipality has been divided into four districts: Santo Cristo, Vila Bom Princípio de Baixo, Sírio and Vila Laranjeira.
No indigenous people were counted in the 2000 and 2010 censuses. The population consists of 92.5% white people, the proportion of descendants of German immigrants is very high. Of 14,378 inhabitants in 2010, 7781 people lived in the urban settlements, 6587 in the extensive rural areas.

City administration
Executive: In the local elections in Brazil in 2016 , Adair Philippsen of the MDB was elected city prefect (mayor) for the term from 2017 to 2020 . The legislature is exercised by a nine-member city council ( câmara municipal ).

The main agricultural crops are soy, corn and wheat. There is pig and cattle breeding.
Average income and standard of living
The average monthly income in 2016 was 2.1 times the Brazilian minimum wage ( Salário mínimo ) of R $ 880.00 (monthly 2019: around € 366). The Human Development Index (HDI) is rated as medium high at 0.738 for 2010. The gross national product per capita was R $ 32,419 in 2016.
