1976: Pupils resist the introduction of Afrikaans as the language of instruction during the uprising in Soweto . Sarafina is ashamed that her mother works as a domestic servant in a white household. She inspires her peers to rebel after her teacher Mary Masombuka was arrested.

Filming

Whoopie Goldberg convinced Disney to make this film because she would then be ready to play the role of Dolores van Cartier again in Sister Act 2 - On a Divine Mission . The film was shot in Soweto and Johannesburg , South Africa . Darrell Rodt directed from the script by Mbongeni Ngema and William Nicholson.

Awards

Sarafina! was shown out of competition at the 1992 Cannes Film Festival .

The German Film and Media Evaluation FBW in Wiesbaden awarded the film the title valuable.

The film was released on September 18, 1992 in English-speaking countries and on April 8, 1993 in Germany. On June 16, 2006 there was a new publication for the 30th anniversary of the uprising in Soweto . This “remastered Directors Cut” version also contains a scene between Sarafina and her mother, which was cut from the original film and contains the song Thank You Mama .

Sarafina! is the film adaptation of the musical of the same name, which premiered in June 1987 at the Market Theater in Johannesburg and was played on Broadway in New York , among other places .
