Hydropower plants
There are several hydropower plants on the Saranac River.
The lowest dam on the Saranac River, the Imperial Dam in Plattsburgh, was built in 1903 for the Imperial Mill there. This still represents an obstacle for the Atlantic salmon , which in earlier times swam up to 30 km up the Saranac River to spawn. Until 1986 electricity was generated at the dam. A fish ladder is still missing at the Imperial Dam .
