The Saranac River is a tributary of Lake Champlain in the US state of New York .

The Saranac River forms the drain of Middle Saranac Lake in the northern Adirondack Mountains . It then flows through the lakes Lower Saranac Lake and Oseetah Lake and the town of Saranac Lake . It continues its course to the east and flows through the reservoirs Franklin Falls Pond , Union Falls Pond . The North Branch Saranac River flows into the river on the left. The river then passes through Saranac and Morrisonville before reaching Plattsburgh , where it flows into Lake Champlain. The Saranac River has a length of about 130 km. Its catchment area covers around 1560 km². The mean discharge is 25 m³ / s.

Hydropower plants

There are several hydropower plants on the Saranac River.

The lowest dam on the Saranac River, the Imperial Dam in Plattsburgh, was built in 1903 for the Imperial Mill there. This still represents an obstacle for the Atlantic salmon , which in earlier times swam up to 30 km up the Saranac River to spawn. Until 1986 electricity was generated at the dam. A fish ladder is still missing at the Imperial Dam .
