particularities Highest fireplace in Europe

The Sass Queder is a 3065 m above sea level. M high peak in the Swiss canton of Graubünden , which is part of the Bernina group . It is not far from the mountain station of the Diavolezza cable car and is therefore an easy hiking destination despite its height.

Location and surroundings

The Sass Queder is rather inconspicuous despite its quality as a three-thousand-meter peak , which is mainly due to the much more prominent mountains in the Bernina, above all the Piz Bernina (4049 m above sea level) and the Piz Palü (3900 m above sea level), whose normal route passes below the Sass Queder. Direct neighbors of the summit are Piz Trovat (3145 m above sea level) in the south, also the reference mountain for dominance, and in the north-west, separated by the Diavolezza, the Munt Pers (3206 m above sea level).

The Sass Queder is located in the municipality of Pontresinas . In the north the mountain slopes down to the Val Bernina and the Bernina Pass , the Pers glacier is a little further away in the south. The Diavolezza ski area extends directly below the mountain, a lift ends and some slopes start on the slope of the Sass Queder.

Due to this location, the summit offers a worthwhile panorama of the Bernina group as well as the Val Bernina and the Valtellina .

Ascent

The Sass Queder is easy to climb via a marked hiking trail from the mountain station of the Diavolezza cable car and the mountain hut attached to it. The tour, which is also suitable for families, takes about half an hour over almost 2 kilometers and only 93 meters in altitude to the summit and falls under the category of (very) easy three-thousanders. On the summit there is next to several stone men also the highest fireplace in Europe, where you can grill. The Sass Queder can be combined well with the surrounding peaks of Munt Pers or Piz Trovat or with a valley descent.

An ascent is also possible in winter. You can reach the summit via the ski slope and a specially prepared path for hikers.
