Sayidiman Suryohadiprojo (born September 21, 1927 in Kabupaten Bojonegoro, Jawa Timur ; † January 16, 2021 in Jakarta ) was a lieutenant general of the armed forces of Indonesia and an Indonesian diplomat and writer who, among other things, was deputy chief of the army from 1973 to 1974, between 1974 and 1978 Governor of the National Resilience Institute Lemhannnas (Lembaga Ketahanan Nasional) and from 1979 to 1983 Ambassador to Japan .

Life

Military career

Sayidiman Suryohadiprojo graduated from the National Military Academy ANM (Akademi Militer Nasional) and after graduating in 1948 found numerous uses as an infantry officer in the army (Angkatan Darat) of the Indonesian armed forces ABRI (Angkatan Bersenjata Republic of Indonesia) . He was initially stationed mainly in Jawa Barat , where he was successively platoon leader , company commander and finally commander of an infantry battalion . In 1960 he became commander of the cadet regiment of the National Military Academy and in 1963 switched to the Army General Staff as an officer. During his military career he completed courses at numerous national and international military educational institutions, such as at the school of the Bundeswehr , the Staff College and the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) in Monterey .

On August 3, 1968, Sayidiman Suryohadiprojo was appointed Brigadier General (Brigadir Jenderal) commander of the military district command (Daerah Militer XIV / Hasanuddin) stationed in Makassar and remained in this post until March 16, 1970. He then acted as major general (Mayor Jenderal) between 1970 and 1973 as Head of Staff Division III (Personnel) of the Armed Forces, before he took over the post of Deputy Chief of Staff of the Army Wakasad (Wakil Kepala Staf ABRI Angkatan Darat) in 1973 as Lieutenant General (Letnan Jenderal ) , replacing Lieutenant General Mochamad Jasin . He held this position until 1974 and was then replaced by Lieutenant General Wahono . He himself, in turn, took over from Lieutenant General A. Kosasih the function of governor of the National Resilience Institute Lemhannas (Lembaga Ketahanan Nasional) and held this position until his replacement by Lieutenant General Sutopo Juwono in 1978. At the same time, as the successor to Lieutenant General Sugih Arto between 1974 and his replacement by Bob Hasan in 1978, he was also chairman of the All-Indonesian Athletics Association PASI (Persatuan Atletik Seluruh Indonesia) .

Ambassador to Japan and member of the People's Consultative Assembly

After retiring from active military service, Sayidiman Suryohadiprojo replaced AJ Witono as ambassador to Japan in 1979 and remained in this post until 1983, when Wiyogo Atmodarminto succeeded him there. After his return in 1983 he became advisor to the Minister of State for Research and Technology Prof. Dr. Bacharuddin Jusuf Habibie appointed for Defense and Security. After founding the Association of Muslim Intellectuals ICMI (Ikatan Cendekiawan Muslim Indonesia) in 1990, he became a member of the ICMI's Central Expert Council, of which he was a member until 1995. When President Suharto chaired the Non-Aligned Movement from 1992 to 1995 , he served as a representative for the African region and was also an adviser to the President of the Republic of Indonesia on national resilience matters. During his membership in the MPR (Majelis Permusyawaratan Rakyat) People's Consultative Assembly between 1993 and 1998, he was also a member of the Council for Higher Education and a member of the National Education Council. At the same time, he was deputy chairman of the ICMI Central Advisory Board from 1995 to 2000.

Publications

In addition to his military and political career, Sayidiman Suryohadiprojo was also active as a writer. He has authored numerous books in which he dealt in particular with issues relating to military and defense policy. In 1997 his autobiography Mengabdi Negara Sebagai Prajurit was published .
