Vegetative characteristics

Scadoxus cinnabarinus is a perennial herbaceous plant . This geophyte forms large onions as persistent organs. In its natural habitat it is largely evergreen; in culture , the plants are allowed to move into the bulbs. The foliage leaves are rosette-like on a pseudostem, so slightly above the onion. The leaves are narrow and taper like a stalk at the bottom.

Generative characteristics

On a relatively short, leafless inflorescence stem there is a hemispherical, umbellate inflorescence with a few bracts that surround the flowers. The stalked, hermaphrodite, threefold flowers are orange in color. There are berries formed.

Occurrence

Scadoxus cinnabarinus is common in tropical Africa . It mainly thrives in the rainforests of Cameroon in a summer rain area. It needs a very warm and humid environment.

Taxonomy

It was first published in 1857 under the name ( Basionym ) Haemanthus cinnabarinus by Joseph Decaisne in Journal Général d'Horticulture , volume 12, p. 27, plate 1195. The new combination to Scadoxus cinnabarinus (Decne.) Friis & Nordal was made in 1976 by Ib Friis and Inger Nordal published in Nordic Journal of Botany , Volume 23, p. 64.
