The Scammell Pioneer was a British artillery tractor , the Scammell produced from 1932 to 1945. The Pioneer was based on Scammell trucks developed in the late 1920s and was used by the British Army during World War II .

Construction and use

A 1944 Scammell Pioneer SV2S Heavy Breakdown 6 × 4 originally used by the Royal Air Force and restored in 2002.

The base vehicle was used as an artillery tractor for heavier guns such as the BL 8-inch Howitzer Mk VII (further development of the BL 8-inch Howitzer Mk I-V ). It had an 8 ton winch and could lift 450 kg. Early examples also transported the BL 6-inch 26 cwt Howitzer until the AEC Matador was available in sufficient numbers and the Morris C8 was also used as an artillery tractor. In addition to the driver, a crew of eight could be transported. The translation of the Pioneer was designed for high tractive power in order to be able to move large payloads through terrain, but it only achieved a low top speed. In order to increase the payload, the Scammell Pioneer semi-trailer and heavier versions of the Pioneer were developed as Heavy Breakdown 6 × 4 Scammell Pioneer SV1S and later SV2S, in order to be able to pull heavier defective or damaged tanks .

Over 786 Pioneers were produced. After the war it was used as a popular heavy haulage and forestry vehicle for civilian use until well into the 1980s. In addition, Scammell Pioneer was and is also used by private individuals for off-road driving and the like, and individual specimens are restored after they have left commercial operation.
