location

Schömbach is located in the eastern tip of Altenburger Land on the Thuringian-Saxon border , which borders the town in the north and east. The federal highway 95 leads past the place in the east. To the west lies the Schömbach dam , which is fed by the Wiera , Leuba and the flowing waters of the Leinawald .

history

The village was first mentioned in a document in 1336. The village was and is characterized by agriculture. Historically, it belonged to the Wettin office of Altenburg , which was under the sovereignty of the following Ernestine duchies from the 16th century due to several divisions in the course of its existence : Duchy of Saxony (1554 to 1572), Duchy of Saxony-Weimar (1572 to 1603), Duchy of Saxony- Altenburg (1603 to 1672), Duchy of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg (1672 to 1826). When the Ernestine duchies were reorganized in 1826, the place came back to the duchy of Saxony-Altenburg.

After the administrative reform in the duchy, it belonged to the eastern district (until 1900) and to the Altenburg district office (from 1900). In 1910 Schömbach had 167 inhabitants. From 1918 the village belonged to the Free State of Saxony-Altenburg , which was added to the State of Thuringia in 1920. In 1922 it came to the district of Altenburg .

On July 1, 1950, Schömbach was incorporated into Neuenmörbitz , which in turn was incorporated into Langenleuba-Niederhain on June 1, 1965. Between 1967 and 1972 part of the village was demolished for the construction of the Schömbach dams, which made the village significantly smaller, which is why it is now only a hamlet-like size. During the second district reform in the GDR in 1952, the existing states were dissolved and the districts were redesigned. Thus, the place came with the Altenburg district to the Leipzig district . When the federal states were reorganized in 1990, Schömbach came back to Thuringia like the Altenburg district. Since the district reform in 1994, the place has belonged to the Altenburger Land district. Today 35 people live in the district.
