The Schönborn'sche Aue is an inland island on the Rhine that was deliberately silted up in the 19th century . It belongs to a series of islands that are located in the Inselrhein between Mainz and Bingen . There is an allotment garden and agricultural areas on the floodplain. Since the beginning of 2013, plans have been implemented to dredge the former arm of the old Rhine as part of renaturation work in order to detach the floodplain from the mainland. This work was successfully completed in November 2015.

Geographical location

The Schönborn'sche Aue is located in the Rhine meadows between the city of Oestrich-Winkel and the city of Geisenheim . Starting at Rhine kilometer 521.9, it extends to kilometer 523. In the east, the floodplain borders directly on the nature conservation and FFH area “Rheinwiesen”.

history

In 1555 the Archbishop of Mainz Daniel Brendel von Homburg gave the Rheingau Vice-Cathedral Friedrich von Stockheim a meadow that had newly formed in the Rhine near Geisenheim. The floodplain was initially named "Stockheimer Aue". In the 17th century the island passed to the Counts of Schönborn and changed its name with the owner. At the beginning of the 19th century, the Sandlache and Harter Aue floodplains on the left bank of the Rhine above Geisenheim increasingly began to silt up. The resulting changed flow behavior of the Rhine became a threat to the Geisenheimer Ufer. To protect it, Baron Hans Carl von Zwierlein tried in 1837/38 to silt up the Schönborn'sche Aue as a counter-building, but the arm of the Rhine, separated from the flowing water by a stone dam, went into rot and formed the breeding ground for a bug plague . In the course of measures to regulate the Rhine , which met with violent protests from the Rheingau population, the silting up was finally decided in 1885. The Geisenheim consul general Eduard von Lade used his good relations with the Prussian government and initially managed to close and partially dismantle already erected regulatory structures, but around the turn of the century the arm of the Rhine around the Schönborn'sche Aue was increasingly filled in. The dredged material from the widening work at Binger Loch was used for backfilling . Since the 1950s, the floodplain, which is still owned by the Counts of Schönborn, has largely been leased to the city of Geisenheim, which made the area available to an allotment garden association.

Renaturation

As part of the A 643 new construction of the Schierstein Rhine bridge by Hessen Mobil , which began in early 2013 , the former arm of the old Rhine on the Schönborn'schen Aue was renatured as a compensation measure . This became necessary because interventions were made in the valuable softwood floodplain of the Rettbergsaue for the six-lane expansion of the motorway between the Schiersteiner Kreuz and the Mainz motorway triangle . The arm of the Old Rhine was dredged over a total of 1.2 km and is now continuously traversed over a width of six meters. A reed zone is to develop on the adjoining inner slope of the river , to which a softwood floodplain , a transition zone and a hardwood floodplain are to be connected. The width of the new landscape changes between 25 and 75 m. The floodplain forest and the typical floodplain vegetation were supposed to be created through natural succession , which is why planting was deliberately avoided. In addition to nature conservation, the renaturation should also improve the runoff regime of the Rhine. The newly created meadow landscape can reduce the flood peaks downstream of the Rhine. The measure is also intended to strengthen the European Natura 2000 network of protected areas . To connect the island to the mainland, a bridge and a pedestrian walkway in the middle were built at the western end of the arm of the Rhine.

  2. Main peak from November 24, 2015: Construction machinery threatens to tip over into the old Rhine arm near Geisenheim. Heavy rainfall on the weekend ensured that after a long period of low water the Rhine level rose by almost 1.50 m, water ran into the old Rhine arm and washed away the land.
