The tower-like structure was built in 1831–1833 in honor of the poet according to plans by Joseph Thürmer on behalf of the manor owner Johann Gottlob von Quandt , a patron of the arts and Goethe admirer . At the laying of the foundation stone, a letter by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was walled in, in which he inquired about the condition of the Quandts' possessions , since he assumed that they had been damaged in the course of the unrest around 1830. The interior of the tower castle was decorated by Quandt in 1836 by Carl Gottlieb Peschel with frescoes from the Goethe ballads The Singer , The Fisherman , Erlkönig , Geistesgruss , The King in Thule and the fairy tale of the green snake . The design of the walls and the ceiling painting was carried out according to designs by Gottfried Semper .

The pleasure palace, which was sold to the city of Dresden in 1925, was transferred back in 1994 and sold in 1997 to the municipality of Dürrröhrsdorf-Dittersbach, who extensively restored it. The park, which was laid out in 1836, is only partially preserved.

The viewing platform offers a wide panoramic view of the Eastern Ore Mountains, Saxon Switzerland, Stolpen and Upper Lusatia.
