Carl Gottlieb Peschel
Carl Gottlieb Peschel (born March 31, 1798 in Dresden ; † July 3, 1879 there ) was a German painter . He belonged to the school of the Nazarenes around Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld . With his historical pictures and frescoes he made an important contribution to the visual artistry of Goethe in the 19th century .
Life
Peschel was born the son of the tax officer Georg Gottlieb Peschel. From 1812 he studied painting at the Dresden Art Academy as a student of Christian August Lindner (1811) and Traugott Leberecht Pochmann (1815/25). When Carl Christian Vogel von Vogelstein painted the ceiling painting for Pillnitz Castle , Peschel temporarily earned his living as an assistant. With the help of his father's share of the inheritance left over from the war, he financed his one-year trip to Rome (1825/26).
His companion on the journey there was Adolf Gottlob Zimmermann (1799–1859), and old and new friends met him in Rome. It was there that a “friendship for life” developed between him and Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld . Anton Josef Dräger introduced Peschel to the Roman art world. With Ludwig Richter, Peschel established a close friendship that lasted lifelong. After his return home he earned his living by painting snuff boxes and giving drawing lessons. The purchase of the painting Elieser and Rebekka at the fountain by the Saxon Art Association improved his financial situation and enabled him to return to art.
In addition to Bonaventura Genelli , he was involved in the painting of the Härtelschen House (Roman House) in Leipzig . Johann Gottlob von Quandt hired him from 1836 to 1838 for the decoration of the " Belvederes " near Dittersbach with frescoes for the Goethe works The Singer , The Fisherman , Erlkönig , Geistesgruß , The King in Thule and The Fairy Tale . In 1837, Carl Gottlieb Peschel succeeded the late master draftsman Christian Ernst Stölzel (1792–1837) at the Dresden Art Academy , and in 1846 he was appointed professor and in 1859 he was admitted to the Academic Council. In the same year the altarpiece for the church in Auerbach / Vogtl was created. Peschel was retired in 1877. In 1879, Friedrich Leon Pohle made a portrait of Peschel that is now in the Dresden gallery.
Peschel preferred Old Testament motifs until around 1850 , then he increasingly turned to the New Testament . He died in Dresden in 1879 and was buried in the Inner Matthäusfriedhof . His grave has not been preserved.
On the 200th birthday of Carl Gottlieb Peschel (1798–1879), the New Masters Picture Gallery of the Dresden State Art Collections honored the artist with a solo exhibition in 1998.
