Student Research Center

A student research center is an institution that is set up to improve the education and support of students, especially in the MINT subjects (mathematics, computer science, natural sciences and technology). There students can carry out their own projects and research, invent and experiment themselves.

A student research center maintains classrooms, laboratories or workshops. Some student research centers work closely with the Jugend forscht initiative . Most student research centers have close relationships with universities, industry and the German Research Foundation . The operation of the student research centers is partly funded by German ministries and the European Union

The first student research center in Germany was the Oberschwaben Student Research Center in Bad Saulgau , which opened in January 2000 and is now called the South Württemberg Student Research Center .

Concept competition for student research centers

In 2014, the Jugend forscht Foundation launched an ideas competition for the establishment of new student research centers. From 2015 onwards, this went over to the nationwide “Student Research Centers Concept Competition”, which was announced jointly with the Joachim Herz Foundation . Every two years, the five best concepts are awarded start-up funding of up to 15,000 euros.
