Schaludok ( Belarusian Жалудок ) is an urban-type settlement in Belarus with 1300 inhabitants (2010).

history

The first mention of the village comes from the second half of the fifteenth century. At that time it belonged to the Grand Duke of Lithuania . In 1486 the village was raised to a minority . In 1490 Casimir IV Jagiełło founded a church. From 1567 the city was the administrative center of the county in the Vilnius region of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. In February 1706, during the Great Northern War, the Swedish King Charles XII stayed. here on. In the 18th century, Schaludok belonged to the Baltic noble family von Tiesenhausen . In 1795, after the third partition of Poland , it became part of the Russian Empire . The last owners were the Czetwertyński princes , for whom Władysław Marconi built a castle in 1908.

After the Polish-Soviet War in 1921 , Schaludok was within the borders of the Second Polish Republic in the Nowogródek Voivodeship . The town had 274 houses as well as the manor , which remained in the possession of the Polish noble family Czetwertyński until 1939. In the course of the Soviet invasion of Poland , Shaludok was occupied by the Red Army on September 19, 1939 . From November 2, 1939, it belonged to the Belarusian Soviet Socialist Republic . In 1940, Schaludok received urban-type settlement status and became the administrative center of the region. In June 1941, Schaludok was occupied by the German armed forces and in 1944 it was retaken by the Soviet army. Since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, it has belonged to Belarus.

Population development

  • In 1897 the place had 1860 inhabitants.
  • According to a general description from 1921, 1552 people lived in the city, of which 994 were Poles, 538 Jews and 19 Belarusians. 1053 confessed to Judaism, 467 to Catholicism and 31 to the Orthodox faith. One resident was Protestant. In the outworks lived 242 inhabitants; 238 Poles and 4 Belarusians. 204 of them were Catholic, 21 Orthodox and 17 Jewish.

Attractions

  • The palace and park complex was designed by the architect Władysław Marconi for Wladimir Czetwertyński in 1908. The Neo-Baroque palace is a monumental two-story building with a high mansard roof with dormers . Together with the surrounding buildings, it is deserted and is gradually falling into disrepair.
