geography
location
The Scharenberg rises in the northern Harz foreland in the north of the Harz Nature Park . To the west it is delimited by the valley of the Gläsecke to the geologically identical Langenberg ( 304 m ). To the south the landscape leads to the northern roofing of the Harz low mountain range and to the south-east through that of the Radau to the Butterberg (approx. 325 m ) about 2 km (as the crow flies ) from the summit .
With the Langenberg directly adjacent to the west and the Hornberg / Butterberg a little further to the east, the Scharenberg is part of the Harz North Rim Fault , a geologically significant activity zone from the Lower Cretaceous .
Natural allocation
The Langenberg belongs to the natural spatial main unit group Northern Harz foreland (No. 51), in the main unit Harzrandmulde (510), in the subunit Harzburger Harzvorland (510 1 ) and its sub-area foothills of the northern Upper Harz (510 1 .4) to the natural area Harzburg-Goslarer Vorberge (510 1 .40).
Naming
The mountain range, mentioned in 1666 as Scharen Berg , probably derives its name from Old High German scara or Middle High German shar , which is in the context of Scharwerk . Consequently, the Scharenberg is a mountain that could be used for certain services for a fee. A reference to the old Franconian scara "border" is excluded, since the Scharenberg never formed a border between two communities and is also geologically less distinctive than other Hercynian neighboring mountains such as the Langenberg.
Trivia
- The Scharenbergsiedlung is named after the mountain.
