Place name and early history

The exact composition of the name Schlewecke is difficult to determine, perhaps there were two names that existed in parallel. It is clear that the historical evidence from the 12th to 13th centuries provides clues to several place-name consignments common in the Braunschweiger Land (-de as in Lengde and wealth, strength , -ferde as in Leiferde ). The name Sleueken was mentioned around 1147 and Slevedhe (with [ ð ] as in English th is?) And Slyofede in the 13th century . A secondary assimilation to the river name suffix -ecke, which is very common in the Bad Harzburg area, or a general change to -k- due to the lack of dominance of the two endings -de / -ferde is also possible, but not guaranteed. If it is the ending -ferde, this in any case indicates a ford , which could be explained by the glass corner flowing through the site or the Radau a little further below .

Schlewecke was first explicitly mentioned in 1180 as a Sclivede in a list of goods from the Goslar Cathedral Monastery . At that time Schlewecke belonged to the accessories of the main Harlingerode farm , in which the subordinate places were administered centrally.

Modern times

Schlewecke in 1910

On June 10, 1708 the Schlewische village church was inaugurated. Until well into the 19th century Schlewecke was a village dependent on agriculture and forestry, which only benefited from the industrial development in the surrounding area with the opening of the Mathildenhütte in 1861 in the neighboring village of Westerode. Between 1893 and 1903 the Harzburg Postal Expedition had its own postal agency in Schlewecke ; Post agents for the position were Dietrich Himstedt (1893/94) and Louis Heyke (1895–1903). From 1910 to 1912, the Oker – Bad Harzburg railway line was built, where the place received a stop. It was abandoned after World War II.

After the Second World War, negotiations were carried out with neighboring communities for the purpose of a merger: in 1953/54 a merger with the community of Harlingerode was considered , which ultimately failed due to the resistance of the Schleweck community council. On January 1, 1963 Schlewecke was finally incorporated into the neighboring village of Bündheim, and in 1972 the community was again part of the city of Bad Harzburg.

The kindergarten on Bahnhofstrasse was opened in 1993. In addition, the place has a primary and a secondary school . Until 1993 the TSG Bündheim-Schlewecke von 1890 eV existed in Schlewecke, which in 1993 merged with another club to form TSG Bad Harzburg . On December 24, 1995, the Schlewecke wind farm near Radauanger went into operation.

Population development

The community of Schlewecke experienced a strong population surge at the end of the 19th century and with the construction of various new development areas in the course of the 20th century (Heisenkamp / Hofbreite, Schlewecker Trift).

education

The municipal kindergarten at Bahnhofstrasse 6b is located in Schlewecke and has been jointly managed with the kindergarten in Göttingerode since 2012. The Oberschule Bad Harzburg is still located in the village with currently (as of 2018) around 550 students.

religion

Schlewecke, like the rest of the region, is evangelical-Lutheran with a large Catholic minority. The Protestant village church, a hall structure of truss , was completed by an inscription inside the church in the 1708th The richly carved pulpit altar dates from the time the church was built.

The next Catholic church is in the neighboring village of Bündheim .

Culture and sport

Due to its very close connection with the neighboring town of Bündheim, Schlewecke's cultural sovereignty has perished over the course of time. The town center is idyllically located on the Gläsecke and includes a village pond with a playground. Immediately to the west of the settlement is the Östlicher Langenberg nature reserve with hiking trails ; the Heisenkamp corridor bordering the village offers a good view of the Harzburg Harz foreland.

The Silberbornbad was opened in Schlewecke in 1970 and expanded in 1994.

Schlewecke has an eventful sports history: The MTV Schlewecke from 1890 was the local sports club in Schlewecke for a long time, the second club was SV Grün-Weiß Schlewecke from 1920 . In the course of the municipal merger with Bündheim, the latter merged with TSV Bündheim from 1921 to form TSG Bündheim-Schlewecke . This merged on April 22, 1993 with the Ballspielverein Bad Harzburg von 1950 eV to form TSG Bad Harzburg von 1890 eV , which took over the year from the oldest club, the Schlewisch MTV.

Apart from the Schützengesellschaft SG Schlewecke v. 1954 e. V. is no longer a sports club in Schlewecke, but there is a locally important fitness center in the village.
