action

An old man comes to a disused carpet factory and remembers his childhood.

As a child he, Ravi, was sold to a carpet factory and worked as a dyer and carpet weaver. His goal is to save enough money to buy his way out. The girl Masha was also sold by her father to the manager of the carpet factory, she works in the deafening noise of the jute mill. Ravi and Masha are friends and when Ravi notices that Masha is about to be sold to a girls dealer in Kolkata , he collects all his savings and buys them free. She promises Ravi to wait for him every full moon in the largest Shiva temple in Kolkata. She goes into town, but is caught off the street and ends up in a brothel.

Ravi, who has meanwhile grown up, has saved enough, buys out of the forced labor and goes to Kolkata. There he finds work at an old carpet dealer, whose granddaughter Deepa takes a liking to Ravi. Masha, now a dancer in the entertainment district, still hopes to go to the Shiva temple when the moon is full; Ravi goes too and thinks she recognizes her, but the amorous Deepa has followed him into the temple and Masha runs away because she thinks he is married.

Ravi sells a carpet to a wealthy man who wants to use it to win a woman he desires, Masha. Ravi then succeeds in expanding the carpet business and trading with Europe. When one of his deliveries of goods has been at customs for a long time, he angrily goes to the customs office to meet the former carpet buyer as a manager, who was successful with his gift. Masha and Ravi meet over a meal and are perplexed. They cannot escape their mutual attraction for one another and begin an extramarital affair as a result of which Masha becomes pregnant. Her husband is transferred to Kerala , southern India, and Masha begs Ravi to run away with him. Ravi comes to the train station to say goodbye, but he cannot escape his world.

Years later, when Ravi and his wife have two sons, Masha's husband shows up with him. He discovered the secret of the two and chased away his wife and illegitimate son. Ravi finds Masha in the prostitute district, she turns him away, deeply hurt; when she still runs after him, he has just left on the ferry.

When Ravi leaves the carpet factory as an old man, he is called by an old woman, they briefly tell each other their life situation. The woman had a son who is now dead. Now she is waiting for the only love of her life that she met in the carpet factory. When Ravi left, she replied to the question of a girl living with her who it was: That was Ravi! whereupon the girl looks after the man with incomprehension.
