The ADAC-Schauinsland-race was a motorsport event mainly in the area of the city of Freiburg im Breisgau , which took place between 1925 and 1984 on a former logging route , today's L 124 ( Schauinslandstraße ) from Horben (today district Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald ) to the Schauinsland -Passhöhe was, whereby 780 meters in altitude had to be overcome over a distance of twelve kilometers. To this day, this is the longest and most winding hill climb in Germany, on which several European hill climb championship races were held.

history

At the instigation of the Freiburg factory owner Peter Josef Hauser, the International Freiburg Record Days were launched almost 20 years after the opening of the logging route from the Schauinsland summit to Günterstal . These were divided into a drag race over one kilometer on the country road between Oberrimsingen and Breisach am Rhein and a mountain prize on the 12 km long, unpaved Schauinsland high road with 173 bends.

On August 15 and 16, 1925, racing cars and motorcycles were launched for the first time in what was subsequently the most famous German hill climb, which was attended by more than 20,000 spectators in its prime. The annual race then became increasingly important; So it was announced internationally in 1927 and received from 1930 the title Bergpreis von Deutschland and from 1931 the designation Great Bergpreis von Deutschland . In 1938 the race was canceled due to political tensions and was not restarted during World War II .

It was not until 1949 that a new edition took place, which was to be held every two years from 1951; the 1955 race was canceled because of the Le Mans disaster . From 1957 the event took place annually until 1970, and every two years from 1972 until the last racing event in 1984. The 1963 race was part of the World Sports Car Championship . Due to increasing criticism from the nature conservation authorities and activists, the 1986 dates were canceled by the organizer and a renewed application for 1988 was rejected by the approval authorities.

From 1925 to 1960 the start was between Kyburg and Bohrer. From 1961 to 1980 the start was at Friedrichshof, directly after the fork in the road to Horben. The reason was the bus to Horben, for which the race had to be interrupted repeatedly until then. The relocation has made the route 811 meters shorter. In 1982 the start was postponed another 200 meters uphill. The destination was also relocated over time. If it was initially after the Rasthaus curve, it was moved in 1984 between the Gießhübel and Ochsenberg curves. This shortened the route from 11 to 8.6 kilometers.

Between 1934 and 1967 there were seven fatal accidents prior to or during the event. For example, the two-time German champion in the 350 cm³ team class, Albert Schneider , had a fatal accident on August 30, 1936.

After a long period of preparation, the first historic Schauinsland race under the name of the 1st ADAC / FMC Oldtimer Festival was approved in 1987 , but it was only held as a demonstration event without time measurement for racing vehicles over 30 years of age.

2015: Entry of the old-timers of the Schauinsland-Klassik on the Freiburg Münsterplatz: Alfa Romeo Junior Zagato , BMW 02 1602 or 1802 as well as Mercedes-Benz W 108 280 SE 3.5 (from back to front)

From 2001, further events of this type were allowed under certain conditions (including a limitation to 80 vehicles and the number of spectators to 5,000) in a two-year cycle. The Schauinsland-Klassik then presented a cross-section of the racing vehicles and racing motorcycles used during the 59 years of the race on the shortened race track every two years.

Starting in 2012, there should be an annual event, one year a pure classic car rally through the Black Forest and the following year as a ride up the classic Schauinsland route. However, the first orientation trip was canceled eight weeks beforehand, in May 2012, after it became known that the finish on Freiburg's Münsterplatz would collide with a church event that had been planned for a long time. The race was rescheduled from July 25 to 27, 2013.

In September 2014 there was a mountain day in which vehicles with electric and hybrid drives also took part. After the 2015 rally, however, there was no mountain day in 2016: Due to a lack of parking spaces, insufficient catering and a lack of permits, the organizers declared that there will be no more mountain days in the future.

The Schauinsland Classic Winter Rally has been held every year since 2016. The start and finish of the race through the Black Forest and the Upper Rhine is the Kirchzarten Oldtimer Museum Volante (which was closed in 2017) . Old and youngtimers built up to 1990 are allowed.

The Schauinsland Classic Summer Rally will take place from July 31 to August 1, 2020.

In 2019, Luc Perraudin, born in Freiburg, brought the eco Grand Prix to Freiburg after two years of planning in cooperation with Badenova AG, ADAC Südbaden eV and the city of Freiburg. This takes up the tradition of the legendary hill climb, in which only 100% electrically powered series e-cars are allowed to participate. After 2019 as a 6-hour format over a distance of approx. 55 km, the ecoGP Schauinsland Hill Challenge 2020 took place as a 24-hour format from the parking lot of the Technical City Hall in Stühlinger via Günterstal up the traditional mountain route and back via Gießhübel in flowing traffic on June 27 + 28, 2020. The plan is to have this endurance challenge take place annually in the future.
