Shefayim ( Hebrew שְׁפָיִים High Hills ) is a kibbutz located 2.5 km north of Herzliya . In 2018 the place had 1276 inhabitants.
history
Kibbutz Schefayim was founded in 1931 by immigrants from Poland who immigrated to Palestine as part of the Aliyah . The name of the place comes from Isaiah 41:18: "I want to open water rivers on the heights." During the League of Nations mandate for Palestine , Shephaim was a center of illegal immigration. During the Palestinian War, Shepayim took in refugees from Kibbutz Beit HaArawa.
In the early 1970s, the kibbutz established the Polycad plastics factory (פוליכד). In the early 1980s, Shafit , a biotechnology facility, was established . In the mid-1990s, the kibbutz bought the Israeli Zirei factory (Zirei Israel plans) and expanded the company into one of the leading companies in the Israeli cotton industry.
In 2012, IBM acquired the software development company Worklight Ltd. who developed apps for smartphones and tablets . The company was founded in 2006 by Shahar Kaminitz from Shefayim, a former executive at Amdocs .
Kibbutz Schefayim is one of the financially strongest members of the kibbutz movement and was one of the few kibbutzim that did not require financial support from the state or banks during the recession of the 1980s.
The main source of income for the kibbutz is Hutzot Shefayim, a shopping mall built on former farmland. Further sources of income are a hotel and conference center, as well as a water park, the so-called Shefayim Water Park.
