Rachel Schapira ( Hebrew רחל שפירא; born 1945 in Shefayim ) is an Israeli poet , songwriter and lyricist .

Childhood and youth

Rachel Shapira was born in Kibbutz Schefayim on the Mediterranean coast near Herzlia, where she also grew up. She has four siblings: Mirijam, Juda, Ethan and Uri. She worked as a teacher in the kibbutz, as a teacher for special education and then for Ivrith at an Israeli language school. In her final years of employment she worked in the guest house of the kibbutz.

Career

Ma Awarech

She first became known to the public in 1967 when she was hired by Jair Rosenblum , musical director of the Israel Defense Forces Choir (IDF). During his vacation on the beach at Shephayim, Rosenblum found Shapira's poem Ma awarech in the local memorial book for fallen soldiers (he: מה אברך; German: What else should I bless [him] with? ). Schapira wrote the poem in memory of her classmate Eldad (Dadi) Kruk (he .: אֶלְדָּד (דדי) קרוק; born September 27, 1945 in Shepayim), who was killed in the six-day war on the front in the battle for the town of Shu'afat . Rosenblum composed the appropriate song for Schapira's text, which was played by the naval military band and sung by the soloist Rivka Zohar . The song is considered one of the most famous Israeli songs in memory of fallen Israeli soldiers.

Kemo Zämach Bar

After the poem / song Ma awarech , Schapira began to publish even more poems. Well-known composers created melodies for their texts, which were sung / performed by well-known Israeli singers. One of the most famous songs is Kemo Zämach Bar (he .: כְּמוֹ צֶמַח בַּר; German: Like a wild flower ), sung by Chava Alberstein in the soundtrack of the TV film Dodi we-Re'ai (he .: דּוֹדִי ורֵעַי; German: My uncle and my friend ), based on the book of the same name, Dodi we-Re'ai , written by the writer Naomi Frenkel (1918–2009). The singer Si Heimann , born in 1961 , daughter of the composer Nachum Heimann (he .: נחום "נחצ'ה" היימן), who was born in 1934, reinterpreted Kemo Zämach Bar years later.

In 1978 Chava Alberstein published an album with songs by Rachel Schapira called Hitbaharut (he .: הִתְבַּהֲרוּת). The following songs by Schapiras were found in Alberstein's album:
