The Greek island of Schinoussa ( Greek Σχοινούσσα ( f. Sg. ), [ Sçiˈnusa ] also Σχοινούσα) belongs to the Small Cyclades . Together with some uninhabited islets, it forms the municipality of Schinoussa of the municipality of Naxos and the Lesser Cyclades in the South Aegean region .

location

Little Cyclades

Schinoussa is about 6 km south of Naxos . The closest islands are Iraklia 3 km southwest and Kato Koufonisi 3 km northeast. The coastline of the 8.144 km², maximally 4.5 km long and 3 km wide island is strongly divided by numerous small bays. In the south, the uninhabited island of Ofidoussa joins directly at a distance of barely 50 m, Argilos is another 400 m south. Aspronisi is 200 m southeast and Klidoura is one km away in the northeast.

history

Presumably the island was during the early Cycladic period in the 3rd millennium BC. Settled. Archaeological finds have shown that Schinoussa has been inhabited since ancient times .

Due to the abundance of pottery finds, it is assumed that there was great trade activity during the Byzantine period. Since the end of the 11th century AD, the island was owned by the Chozoviotissa monastery (Παναγία Χοζοβιώτισσα) on Amorgos.

After the conquest of Constantinople during the Fourth Crusade , Schinoussa came to the Venetian Duchy of Archipelagos , which was founded in 1207 by Marco Sanudo . After Chaireddin Barbarossa's fleet conquered Naxos, the Ottoman rule began. Presumably the island was uninhabited during the Ottoman period due to pirate raids .

With the London Protocol of 1829 , Schinoussa became part of the new Greek state like the other Cyclades islands. Mainly people from Amorgos settled back on the island in the middle of the 19th century. At the beginning of the 20th century, many people left the island for Athens. During the Second World War , Schinoussa was first occupied by Italy from 1941 to 1943 and then by the German Wehrmacht until 1944 . Due to the poor economic situation, many people were forced to leave the island after the war.

Although transport links are still a problem, improved educational facilities as well as emerging tourism have helped young families choose the island as their place of residence over the past two decades.
