Onderbanken ( listen ? / I ) was a municipality in the Dutch province of Limburg . Its total area was 21.24 km², on September 30, 2018 it had 7791 inhabitants. On January 1, 2019, Onderbanken merged with Nuth and Schinnen to form the new municipality of Beekdaelen . Audio file / audio sample

Location and economy

The community is located in South Limburg , between Sittard-Geleen and Brunssum , north of Heerlen, near the border with Germany. Gangelt is located directly to the north and Geilenkirchen further east . The villages have managed to keep their rural character, and there is no direct connection to motorways or railways. Due to its quiet location, the place has attracted sculptors , painters and other artists .

The inhabitants of Onderbanken are partly commuters who work in the surrounding towns. Agriculture is also important. By developing a German-Dutch nature reserve (Rode Beek / Rodebach: wetland, forest, bird reserve) together with Gangelt, the municipality tries to promote gentle tourism .

On January 1, 2019, Onderbanken merged with Nuth and Schinnen to form the new municipality of Beekdaelen .

Due to the merger on January 1, 2019, the citizens of the communities of Nuth, Onderbanken and Schinnen elected the council of the new community of Beekdaelen on November 21, 2018.

Remarks
aDue to the merger of Bingelrade, Jabeek, Merkelbeek and Schinveld to form the new municipality of Onderbanken on January 1, 1982, the municipal council elections were held in 1981. Until 1983 the community was called Schinveld.
b In 1986 the Democrats Onderbanken took part in the elections as "Lijst Van Aarnhem" and in 1981 under the name "Belangen Groot Schinveld".

Origin of name

In the late Middle Ages , so-called “onderbanken” ( subordinate courts ) which were subordinate to the “Rechtsbank”, court in Heerlen , had their seat in Schinveld.

Schinveldse Bos

The “Schinveldse Bos” forest area also belonged to the community and is also located in the approach route of the nearby AWACS aircraft. For safety reasons, a swath was cut in the forest for the landing aircraft in January 2006, against which the residents of Onderbanken and the neighboring Brunssum defended themselves unsuccessfully.
