The Battle of Sit ( Russian Ситская битва or Сражение на реке Сить ) on March 4, 1238 was a decisive battle during the Mongol invasion of Russia .

A Mongolian army under Batu Khan defeated the army of the Grand Duke of Vladimir Juri II , who died in the battle , on the Sit River in the western part of today 's Yaroslavl Oblast . The Mongols had previously conquered Ryazan , defeated Juri's sons near Kolomna and set fire to Vladimir and Moscow . In the following weeks, Batus Heer subjugated other principalities in the north of the Kievan Rus , including Tver , Yaroslavl , Pereslavl , Galitsch , Kostroma and Koselsk , while Smolensk , Novgorod and Pskov were able to prevent an invasion by paying tribute. In the summer of 1238 the Mongols withdrew south to the Don . Juri's successor as Grand Duke of Vladimir was his brother Yaroslav II.

At the likely site of the battle near the village of Lopatino in Nekous district , about 25 kilometers northwest of the Nowy Nekous district administrative center , a memorial stele was erected on the left bank of the Sit, where commemorative events take place every summer.
