Whipped cream (Strauss)

Schlagobers is a ballet in two acts by Richard Strauss (op. 70). The libretto was written Strauss himself. It is the composer's second ballet composition after Joseph's legend (1914).

Emergence

After Strauss went to the Vienna State Opera as co-director alongside Franz Schalk in 1919 , he wanted to give ballet new impetus there and worked with the dancer and choreographer Heinrich Kröller . Since his relationship with his longtime librettist Hugo von Hofmannsthal was a bit tense, he wrote the libretto for the ballet Schlagobers himself and saw this as a slightly ironic homage to the Viennese coffee house culture . The world premiere took place on May 9, 1924 at the Vienna State Opera. The main roles were Riki Raab , Tilly Losch as "Princess Tea Blossom" and Hedy Pfundmayr as "Prince Coffee". Although the music and the choreography were largely judged very well, the piece as a whole, with a very elaborate set design and scenes of gluttony and excess during the current economic crisis, was subject to severe criticism as a result of the First World War . Strauss felt this was unfair and Romain Rolland quoted the composer in a diary entry from May 12, 1924: “People always expect ideas, big ideas from me. I have a right, don't you, to write the music that suits me. I can't stand the tragedy of our time. I want to make you happy. I need this. ”The work was not performed as a whole for decades due to continued criticism. It was not until the 150th birthday of Richard Strauss was approaching that ballet was returned to the repertoire of individual houses, for example in 2013 at Carnegie Hall in New York City . Performances at the Gärtnerplatztheater in Munich will follow in December 2014.

A group of children celebrates their confirmation in a large Viennese pastry shop and can help themselves to the most delicious cakes with whipped cream and many other sweets to celebrate the day. A boy does this so extensively that he feels sick and has to go to a sick bed. In his nightmares, sweets of all kinds from the kingdom of the Princess Praline and from the liquor cabinet dance around him.
