Organization of World Heritage Cities
The Organization of World Heritage Cities (OWHC, English ) ( French : Organization des Villes du Patrimoine Mondial (OVPM); Spanish : Organización de las Ciudades del Patrimonio Mundial (OCPM)) is an association of cities on whose urban area one of the UNESCO recognized world heritage site is located. The organization was founded on September 8, 1993 in Fez (Morocco) by delegates from 56 cities. Its headquarters are in Québec (Canada), where the first international symposium of cities with world heritage sites took place in 1991. The organization currently has more than 300 member cities (as of 2018).
tasks
The main tasks of the OWHC are support in the implementation of the World Heritage Convention, cooperation and exchange of information in the preservation and management of World Heritage sites as well as developing a feeling of solidarity among the member cities. The general assembly of the OWHC consists of the mayors of the cities and meets every year (until 2003 every two years). An eight-member board is elected from the ranks of the General Assembly. He is assisted by a general secretariat, which implements the resolutions of the general assembly and manages the OWHC administratively.
There are also eight regional secretariats:
- Tunis (Tunisia) for Africa ( Africa and Middle East )
- Gyeongju (South Korea) for the Asia-Pacific region ( Asia-Pacific )
- Morelia (Mexico) for Central America, Caribbean and Mexico ( Central America, Caribbean and Mexico )
- Kazan (Russia) for Eurasia ( Euro-Asia )
- Budapest (Hungary) for Central and Eastern Europe ( Eastern and Central Europe )
- Rímac (Peru) for South America ( South America )
- Regensburg , formerly Augsburg (Germany) for Northwest Europe and North America ( Northwest Europe and North America )
- Córdoba (Spain) for Southern Europe ( Southern Europe / Mediterranean )
