The Ka 1 was the first glider manufactured by the aircraft manufacturer Rudolf Kaiser . He designed it from 1950 to 1952 during his studies at the State Building School in Coburg and built the first copy himself in his own apartment. The first flight took place on the Wasserkuppe at Easter 1952 .

The Ka 1, like Kaiser's later small sailors Ka 3 and Ka 9, was not built by Schleicher , but by various manufacturers and privately by amateurs, for example the prototype of the Ka 3 from the glider pilot group in Königstein im Taunus (the Ka 3 was a Ka 1 with tubular steel fuselage). In 1955 Leo Allkämper flew the prototype of the Ka 3 from Egelsbach airfield near Frankfurt am Main, the sensational distance of 250 km to Neuburg an der Donau for this type of aircraft.

construction

The Ka 1 had a V-tail unit, which is supposed to provide less aerodynamic drag due to its smaller surface compared to a conventional tail unit, but is rarely found in sailplane construction. The aircraft was designed as a strutted high- wing aircraft and had a fuselage constructed in plywood shell construction with a landing skid and a landing gear. The small span of only 10 m and the very low empty weight of 98 kg are striking. A total of only ten copies were built, two of which are still registered in Germany.

Ka 3

variants

  • Ka 1, starting model with V-tail in wood construction, also known as "Rhönlaus"
  • Ka 3, tubular steel fuselage and wings made of wood
