Grinding bar
The Schleifersteg is a pedestrian bridge over the Pegnitz in Nuremberg and connects the flea market island with the An den Fleischbänken square on the Sebald (northern) side of the old town.
history
Originally there was a wooden bridge at this point, which was also called the pan bridge. He connected the then Säumarkt (as the flea market island was called because of the pigs traded there) with the meat banks southwest of the main market .
After the Second World War, a steel structure was built in place of the old wooden bridge, which in turn gave way to today's prestressed concrete bridge in 1956 .
With the name “Schleifersteg”, which is derived from the nearby grinding mills , another Pegnitz crossing in Nuremberg was also used during the imperial city period. This wooden footbridge, also known as the Katharinensteg , connected the island of Schütt with the south bank of the Pegnitz, roughly at the height of today's pedestrian bridge at the Cinecittà multiplex cinema . It was destroyed in a flood in 1595, but rebuilt.
