The sandstone bridge was built in 1486 and has largely been preserved in its original state. It used to be called Säubrücke (on the flea market island there was a market where pigs were traded in the Middle Ages), Derrersbrücke (after the patrician family Derrer von Unterbürg), Holzbrücke and Bitterholzbrücke .

There was originally a wooden walkway between the Lorenz old town side and the flea market, which was destroyed in 1451. In the following year, the long bridge , a covered wooden bridge that hung on stone pillars, was built to replace it . This construction gave it the nickname Hanging Bridge .

In 1603 and 1604 a new structure was built in place of the hanging bridge. Based on the model of a bridge over the Brenta near Bassano del Grappa ( Ponte di Bassano ) built by the Italian architect Andrea Palladio , council builder Wolf Jacob Stromer had a 40 meter long and 7.5 meter wide wooden bridge built. On both sides of the building there were 20 grocer's booths that were rented to dealers. Due to the alphabetical littering of the booths (see seven-color alphabet ), the bridge was given the name ABC-Brücke .

1728 ABC dilapidated bridge was then the still existing arch bridge made of sandstone replaced. In honor of the then emperor Charles VI. or his wife Elisabeth , the building was originally called Kaiserbrücke or Elisabethbrücke .
