geography

The island lies in the east-west direction with a length of 630 meters in the Pegnitz and has a maximum width of 120 meters. 1.8 hectares of the total area of 5.2 hectares are designated as green space.

The larger central part of the island between Heubrücke and Spitalbrücke in the west and Steubenbrücke in the east belongs to the Lorenz district . The western tip is in the Sebald district , and the eastern tip belongs to Marienvorstadt .

The west (called Vordere Insel Schütt) and east (Hintere Insel Schütt) of the island are built on, with green spaces in between and an underground car park. The hospital bridge (to the north) and the hay bridge (to the south) open up the west of the island and allow access to the underground car park. In the middle of the island, pedestrians can use the Hohen Steg (to the north) and the Cinecittà Bridge (to the south), in the east of the island the underground car park can be reached via the Agnesbrücke (from the south). In the far east, a footbridge leads to Wöhrder Wiese . There, ring roads also roam the island over the Steuben Bridge and the Franz Josef Strauss Bridge .

history

The Pegnitz encamped sandbanks, which were supplemented by artificial embankments. An island was reported for the first time in 1376.

1320-1325 fortifications were built in the west of the island at the connection of the penultimate city walls , of which the debtor's tower is still preserved. By 1339 part of the Heilig-Geist-Spital was built on the western tip of the island. In the course of the construction of the last city wall , the fortifications were pushed forward to the eastern tip of the island; the construction work was probably completed by 1400. In 1547 the Tratzenzwinger was built on older foundations .

The area in the middle of the island was undeveloped for a long time and was used for all kinds of amusement events. In addition to other markets, the Christkindlesmarkt (from 1898 to 1917) was held on the island. At the turn of the century, the wild bath in the center of the island offered a swimming pool for those who love to swim. In 1909, a flood of the century flooded large parts of the island and destroyed some bridges.

In 1958 the arm of the Pegnitz between the two islands (Kleine and Große Insel Schütt) was filled in for better flood protection. In place of the parking lot, which existed until 1980, an underground car park was built and covered with green spaces.

The Insel Schütt elementary and middle school is located in the east of the island.

In the art program accompanying the 2006 soccer World Cup , the sculpture Pavilions by Olaf Nicolai was installed in the green spaces, consisting of three cages in which soccer can be played. In addition to the green areas and the pavilions, there is a playground. These areas are used for a stage for the Bardentreffen in August and for the Old Town Festival in September.

A 170-meter-long bank terrace facing the Pegnitz was developed in 2016 with urban renewal funds as part of the "Old Town on the Water" project on the southern island of Schütt. The project was accompanied by intensive public participation.

Infrastructure

The south exit of the Wöhrder Wiese underground station is on the rear island of Schütt, and the tram stop of the same name is on the Steubenbrücke between Nonnenbach and Pegnitz .
