history

In 1367 the Admont Abbey acquired the Mereinhof zu Pichl , today's Admontbichl Castle. It served as the administrative seat for the surrounding properties of the monastery. And it was fortified to serve as a refuge for the population in case of danger. Extensive forest areas where charcoal was produced belonged to the manor of the property. It was delivered to iron and steel works in Carinthia . In the 15th and 16th centuries, the Kainachers , the Gallenbergers , the Zach family and the Goltschän family acted as administrators or tenants.

Under Daniel Ritter von Gallenberg, the property was expanded to its present size from 1530 on behalf of the Admont Abbey. At that time, today's chapel and a bastion in front were built . In order to finance the expansion, Gallenberg burdened his subjects unduly and arbitrarily increased the grain tax, which earned him the reputation of a peasant smuggler. Hans de la Porta, Bernard de Novo and Master Thomas Püchler have been handed down as builders and stonemasons who participated in the construction. The wall paintings in the summer house are by Veit von Seckau. In 1599 there was a fire in Obdach. Therefore, at the beginning of the 17th century, the regional court was relocated to Admontbichl. In the time around 1662 the castle was "modernized". In 1748 a fire broke out, which caused severe devastation and, among other things, destroyed the two round corner towers in the north wing.

Until 2012 the castle belonged to the Admont Abbey, which housed a forest administration in it. It has been owned by Dietrich Mateschitz ever since .

architecture

The castle, designed in the style of the Renaissance , is a three-storey, strongly structured building with a round corner tower . It is surrounded by some farm buildings. The building consists of several wings that enclose a small, rectangular inner courtyard with a draw well dug in 1639. The ground floor of the east wing has round pillar arcades in front , the upper floor has slimmer pillar arcades. The first floor of the south wing also has arcades of columns. The square courtroom is located inside the south wing. The outer facades of the castle are structured by wide, horizontal and vertical plaster strips. There is a bay window with a tent roof above the simple arched gate . There is a sundial next to the bay window. The passage is spanned by a simple vaulted cap .

Of the former fortifications, only the remains of the curtain wall and parts of a masonry ditch are preserved.
