Bleiburg Castle (2006)

Bleiburg Castle ( Slovene Grad Pliberk ) stands elevated on a protruding hill above the town of Bleiburg .

history

The former castle was probably built at the beginning of the 12th century. In 1228 the "Pliburch" was named as the seat of the Counts of Heunburg . After the Heunburgs died out, the castle came to the Aufenstein family in 1322. In 1378 the dukes Albrecht and Leopold of Austria besieged the castle. It came into the possession of the two dukes, who pledged it from time to time. In 1507 Count Julian Lodron , the keeper of Maximilian I , was allowed to build 400 guilders into the fortress. Ungnad von Sonnegg, who was related by marriage to the Lodron, expanded the castle further. In 1601 it came to Hans-Ambros Graf von Thurn and Valsassina , who converted it into a palace in the style of the late Renaissance and Mannerism . The castle is still owned by the Thurn-Valsassina family today.
