Hochaltingen Castle is an oval-rectangular three-wing rampart with an outer moat. From 1764 to 1899 it was the summer residence of the ruling princes of Oettingen-Spielberg . The castle is located in the Hochaltingen district of the Fremdingen community ( Donau-Ries district ).

history

The main building of the castle, as it is today, was built in 1551 when the Lords of Hürnheim , long ousted from their former position by the Counts of Oettingen, moved here . In 1585 ownership passed through Cordula von Hürnheim to the Barons von Welden, who renovated the castle. The baronial family sold the castle and the rule to the Oettingen-Spielberg family in 1764 . The princely summer residence was redesigned between 1853 and 1859. During this time, the large palace hall received a coat of arms frieze as a special decoration, which shows around two hundred coats of arms from Oettingscher fiefs . The corners of the stucco ceiling in the coat of arms hall are decorated with depictions of the four seasons.

The Princely House of Oettingen-Spielberg sold the building for 70,000 marks in August 1899 to the Order of the Dillinger Franciscan Sisters (coat of arms above the chapel window), who ran a housekeeping school here and later an old people's home. In 1997, the Dillingen Franciscan Sisters sold the castle to the Teutonic Order , which continues the old people's home to this day.

The historically valuable castle chapel dates from the time the castle was built. In it there is a winged altar made in the middle of the 16th century with the Virgin and Child (from the Ulm school) from around 1500.

The coats of arms of the former owners are located above the main portal of the castle: 1551 Hürnheim, 1651 Welden and 1764 Oettingen-Spielberg. The solid incision of the moat once created around the castle is still clearly visible today. The partially preserved interior is mainly from the 19th century.

A description of the castle from 1671 tells of the dominant location of the building, from the second floor of which one can see around 70 towns, market towns and villages .
