history
Ernst Frickhinger was able to observe a Hallstatt- era cultural layer during an excavation on the upper slope of the Schlossberg in 1932 , which indicates that the mountain was settled at that time. Remains of a prehistoric fortification were not found.
The castle was probably built in the 12th century by the Lords of the Reich Ministerial von Alerheim and was first mentioned in 1147.
In 1235, Emperor Friedrich II kept his rebellious son, King Heinrich (VII) , in custody in this castle before he moved him to Apulia and had him imprisoned in Fort San Fele and other castles in southern Italy until his death .
Around 1300 the castle was owned by the Counts of Truhendingen , from 1306 to 1336 in the fief of the Counts of Öttingen (Öttingen-Öttingen) and in 1363 it came to the Eichstätt Monastery . From 1444 to 1484 it was owned by the imperial city of Nördlingen , was then sold to Bayern-Landshut , came back to the House of Öttingen (Oettingen-Wallerstein) in the middle of the 16th century and was expanded into a castle .
In the Thirty Years' War the castle was captured and destroyed by imperial troops in 1634 ; after that it was used as a quarry. Parts of the gate , the curtain wall and the remains of the moat have been preserved from the former castle complex.
In 1931 Friedrich Buyer acquired the ruin, whose heirs sold it in 1979 to Georg H. Appl, who renovated the rest of the building and added new buildings to match the style of the former palace complex.
