History / building description

The noble free von Lierheim were an old knightly line that produced some high church dignitaries. For example, from 1071 to 1086 Otto von Lierheim was opposing bishop in Constance and in Augsburg in 1091 Hartwig von Lierheim was elected bishop. The aristocratic family had their property mostly on the lower reaches of the Eger in the Nördlinger Ries . Between 1381 and 1427 the rule of the Lierheimer was gradually bought up by the Counts of Oettingen . On August 25, 1427, Count Ludwig von Oettingen acquired the ruinous Lierheim Castle. 27 years later, Count Wilhelm von Oettingen sold it with all its accessories, including the serfs, to Amalie Erckinger von Mittelburg and her sons.

In 1495 the entire area passed to the lords of Hürnheim-Niederhaus-Hochaltingen, who sold the castle and village to the imperial city of Nördlingen in 1541 . The Nördlingen master builder Wolfgang Walberger was responsible for the renovation work between 1579 and 1584. The northern and the southwestern part, built with a humpback ashlar , are still largely preserved. Furthermore, Wallberger built the eastern main gate in 1606 with the coat of arms of those of Lierheim (which died out in 1568) as well as the Nördlinger Pfleger, Ebersbach, Gundelfinger and Lemp. The aforementioned built a gate tower within the bridge between 1612 and 1614, which was removed in 1875.

The castle underwent a radical redesign and significant expansion between 1758 and 1762 on behalf of the new owners, the Teutonic Order . The builder was Matthias Binder . The representative living rooms and offices were given magnificent stucco ceilings that are still preserved today. The stucco work was probably done by Anton Landes from Wessobrunn .

In 1874 the castle came into the possession of the Meyer family; In 1971 the Gerlinger family bought the imposing building and had it completely renovated. The castle and its park are surrounded by a circular wall (which is currently being renovated) with loopholes and round watch towers.
