The castle of the town of Rain in the Donau-Ries district is located in the north of the old town of Rain. It is divided into the Old Castle and the New Castle . The building is a protected monument .

history

The castle was built between 1392 and 1421 under the Wittelsbach dukes Stephan III. and Ludwig VII. With the death of Ludwig the Duchy of Bavaria-Ingolstadt ended . Originally the building was a three-wing complex surrounded by a moat . The castle was secured to the north and east by the castle bastion and the city wall. The only access was via a drawbridge on the south side of the castle. In 1890 the east wing was demolished and in 1960 the moats were filled.

The Bavarian dukes or electors hardly lived in the castle. It was mainly the seat of the caretaker and judge. In 1713, alleged witches were beheaded and burned in the rear courtyard after painful torture. During the War of the Spanish Succession , the castle served as a cavalry barracks. From the 18th century until 30 June 1932, served the district court Rain or from October 1879 (reorganization by the Courts Act ) the District Court Rain as a seat.

During the National Socialist era , the Association of German Girls met in rooms in the building. After 1945 displaced families lived there temporarily and girls 'and boys' classes were housed until the 1970s. The first classes of the Rain State Realschule, founded in 1970, were taught in the castle (school building occupied in 1972).

Today the building, which was extensively renovated in 2008, houses various clubs and the culture hall of the city of Rain.

Building description

The castle has been rebuilt and significantly changed several times over the centuries. Today it presents itself as a three-part single-wing system. The western part of the castle consists of a high gable building with a bay window and battlement gable . The middle section is transverse and has a round arched gate. The former old castle is now the much smaller east wing that was rebuilt. It is provided with a crenellated gable.
