Leopoldstein Castle

The Leopold Flintlock is a castle in Münichtal in iron ore in Styria .

history

In 1434, with the Sauriesselgut and the Ruernschopfgut, two rural properties are mentioned, which were also managed until 1665. Leopold Freiherr von Neidthardt zu Spathenbrunn, Oberkammergraf in Eisenerz, combined the two estates and from 1666 expanded the Sauriesselgut into a castle-like property. The name was supposedly in honor of Emperor Leopold and according to other information, because the inauguration of the palace building took place on the name of the builder. Under the owner Johann G. Ledermayer, most of it burned down in 1706 due to a lightning strike. From 1780 to 1839 the castle belonged to the Paumann trade family and in 1870 it came into the possession of Prince Liechtenstein . He sold it around 1880 to Prince Arnulf of Bavaria , who had it converted into a summer residence between 1890 and 1895 based on the model of the Bavarian royal castles in the historicizing style.

In 1935, the palace again came into the possession of the Liechtenstein family and three years later to that of the housing corporation of the Reichswerke Hermann Göring in Linz. After the war, the Wohnungs-AG (WAG) was re-established with the federal government as the owner. They leased the castle and the outbuildings to the State of Styria until 2022 .

The WAG as the owner of the castle was in the wake of the federal housing agencies privatization in 2004 as a "package" with the companies BUWOG , EBS apartment mbH Linz and ESG Villach to the so-called "Austro consortium " ( Raiffeisenlandesbank Upper Austria , Wiener Städtische , Oberösterreichische Landesbank , Upper Austria Insurance and Immofinanz ). In 2017 the forest belonging to the castle was sold and in 2018 talks were held regarding the sale of the castle.

investment

The current appearance of the castle next to the Leopoldsteiner See is characterized by historicizing elements based on the model of the Bavarian royal castles and consists of loosely arranged main and ancillary buildings within a surrounding wall next to a striking defensive tower . The five large halls of the castle are richly decorated in the form of wall paneling, coffered ceilings, tiled stoves and heraldic decorations. The Leopoldstein Palace Chapel is dedicated to the Holy Virgin Mary's Conception .

use

The castle is a boarding school of the Federal Trade Academy and Federal Trade School Eisenerz and is used by the State of Styria as a youth sports center in summer.
