history

Reichstädt Palace, park side

The origins of the castle go back to a manor that probably existed in Reichstädt since the 13th century. Already in 1336 a mansion of the Lords of Reichenstadt was mentioned. In 1503 it was acquired by the mountain lord Sigismund von Maltitz , who achieved prosperity in 1507 with the invention of the wet stamping machine . Under his descendant Heinrich von Maltitz, the manor was converted into a moated castle in 1535 . The east wing with its round tower, built in the Renaissance style , bears witness to this reconstruction . Overall, however, little information is available from this phase of the castle's history. A survey map from 1570 only makes it clear that the complex consisted of a collection of two-story buildings that were surrounded by a moat.

In 1569 the property became the property of the Saxon Elector August I , who used it as a hunting lodge. During the Thirty Years' War , the palace and property were partially destroyed by Heinrich von Holk's troops in 1632 . From 1639 the rebuilding took place under the court marshal and official governor Heinrich von Taube , who received the complex from Elector Johann Georg I as a donation. In 1682 the castle was sold to the von Nostitz family . In 1717 Gottlob von Nostitz sold Reichstädt Palace to his sister Charlotte Christiane von Nostitz, the wife of Caspar Abraham von Schönberg (1680–1763) to Maxen and Wittgensdorf . Reichstädt thus came into the hands of the Saxon noble family von Schönberg , who owned the castle until 1945 and has owned it again since 1998.

During the Seven Years' War , the castle again suffered major damage. In the year of the end of the war, Reichstädt came into the possession of the postmaster general Adam Rudolph von Schönberg , who had it expanded into a baroque complex with a park from 1765–1776 . The individual parts of the building were combined to form a four-wing complex. The western part of the moat was filled in to create a smooth transition to the park area. Inside, Reichstädt was given an elaborate rococo interior . A bronze bust placed in the courtyard commemorates Adam Rudolph von Schönberg. Reichstädt Palace was inherited from Adam Rudolph von Schönberg within the line. Since he received Purschenstein Castle as an inheritance in 1772 , he and his descendants only lived temporarily in Reichstädt. Under Caspar Hugo von Schönberg (1833–1890) the baroque palace park was partially redesigned into a rural landscape park . In 1858 he also had the memorial stone for Adam Rudolph von Schönberg erected.

During the Second World War , Reichstädt Palace also served as a storage location for art treasures. a. Parts of Heinrich von Brühl's swan service . In May 1945, Soviet soldiers devastated the valuable interior of the palace. The last owners, Hans and Margarete von Schönberg, were expropriated by the Soviet occupying power as part of the land reform , so that in October 1945 they left their entire property in the western occupation zones . The monument to Adam Rudolph von Schönberg was also removed.

In the following decades the castle was used for cultural purposes and the like. a. as a kindergarten, school as well as pioneer and culture house as well as a residential building. For the new uses, the interior was partially renovated, but the exterior of the castle was retained in its basic substance. After turning the system was temporarily empty before 1998 for a purchase price of 30,000 DM from Dr. Ilse von Schönberg was acquired and thus returned to the possession of the von Schönbergs.

With the repurchase, the gradual renovation of the structurally valuable facility began, which is currently not yet completed but is already well advanced. In the meantime, around 60% of the castle has been renovated with a budget of around € 2 million (as of spring 2015). In the course of the renovation, u. a. Valuable Secco paintings from the Baroque and painted wooden beam ceilings from the Renaissance are exposed. Parts of the castle premises are available to the public for events and overnight stays.
