history

Under Count Andreas von Sonnenberg which originated residential palace in Scheer on the Danube . To do this, he got the builder Lienhart from Mengen . From 1452 the estate was owned by the Waldburg-Scheer family . The castle was built in place of the early medieval count castle between 1485 and 1496. On October 8, 1505, the castle chapel on the third floor of the central building was inaugurated by the Constance bishop Hugo von Hohenlandenberg . To the south, the complex is secured by a 25-meter-deep moat from the Raigelsberg (later the castle park). To the west and east are natural steep slopes. The castle was separated from the northern forecourt, which had long served as a “ bleach ”, by a drawbridge . The walled area of the parish church of St. Nicholas bordered this northern forecourt , so that the castle could only be reached from the northeast via the steep castle path.

In the years 1561 to 1565 the castle was under the Reichserbtruchsess Wilhelm d. J. expanded in a second construction phase. The year 1565 in the office building indicates this date. The building, only two floors, with a later mansard hipped roof , is laterally connected to the north building and the central block. In between is the forecourt over the former moat that was filled in.

During the reign of Josef Wilhelm von Waldburg's Truchsessen , a guardroom with a prison was built as an extension on the west side of the north wing. There were two detention cells, three detention rooms and one detention room. The construction of the small round tower in the Zwinger on the south side with niche windows and eight-sided ridge-dome vaults and a corresponding tent roof also fell during this time . At that time, the bridge to the park was probably built and the Raigelsberg was laid out as an English landscape garden, the current castle park. The arched gate to the Schlosssteige was added in the 18th century, as was the one-story coach house.

In 1785, the Counts of Waldburg sold the entire immediately imperial county of Friedberg-Scheer with the Lordship of Dürmentingen and Busses to Prince Karl Anselm von Thurn und Taxis for 2,100,000 guilders, while the annual income was said to be only 26,000 guilders. In 1786 the purchase was approved by the emperor. In 1805 the sovereign rights fell to the Kingdom of Württemberg, the castle remained in the possession of the Thurn und Taxis family until 1967 .
