Stein Castle

Stein Castle , also known as Stein Castle , is a well-preserved rock castle from the Middle Ages on a steeply rising rock about 200 meters above the bottom of the Upper Drautal in Carinthia . The castle stands on the south side of the Drau between Oberdrauburg in the west and Dellach im Drautal in the east, to whose district it belongs. To the north of the castle, across the Drau, lies the municipality of Irschen .

history

Stein Castle was built in the late 12th century, and around 1190 it was mentioned in the possession of the Count Haidenrichs de Lapide, Ministerial of Ortenburg . In the 13th century the castle and lordship of Stein belonged to the Meinhardiner , Counts of Gorizia. Stein was first mentioned in documents in 1440, when it was owned by the Counts of Cilli . In 1456 it came to the Habsburg sovereign princes.

Lords of Trench

In 1500 King Maximilian I gave the rule and castle of Stein to Virgil von Graben and his son Lukas von Graben zum Stein . This line of the Lords of Graben , the line on the stone , was henceforth called Von Graben zum Stein . Over this the rule came to the second Tyrolean line of the Lord von Graben, who then also called themselves Von Graben zum Stein .

After the death of Christof David von Graben zum Stein from this second Tyrolean line, who remained childless, in 1664, an inheritance dispute broke out over the Stein dominion, which had high tax debts ; because both the third Tyrolean line of Von Graben, descended from Georg von Graben, a son of Virgil von Graben, and the Lords of Lamberg made inheritance claims on Stein. Christof David's great cousin Hans [Johann] Karl von Graben had tried to acquire the inheritance from Innsbruck while he was still alive. When Hans Karl inquired about the exact relationship to the Von Graben von Stein remaining in Carinthia, he had to (“I have to) hear the most painful information that people say that von Graben living in Tyrol were bastards who had emigrated from Carinthia ” . Hans Karl therefore set up an exact family tree in which he could clearly be viewed as a descendant of Virgil von Graben. After careful research, he realized that at that time, as reasons of age, he did not seem to have acted as a fiefdom recipient, but his son Lukas, the older brother of Hans Karl's father Georg von Graben. Thus, Hans Karl was only a side relative of the first fief recipient and, according to the succession, was not entitled to inheritance, since only direct descendants of Lukas von Graben zum Stein, but also those of his brother Bartlmä von Graben, were entitled to inheritance. The inheritance fell back to the Habsburg sovereigns, since the Lamberger were only related to the Von Graben zum (von) Stein through the female line.

Other owners

The Habsburgs sold stone to Balthasar von Beverellis ( Von Beverelli , De Pervellis ) in 1668 . In 1681 Stein went to Orsini-Rosenberg , who was descended from the Lords of Graben . The castle complex is still in their possession today and is not open to the public.

Construction details

The 15 meters high square keep was the palace built separately and was originally connected to it by a wooden bridge. Today it is partially dilapidated and serves as a lookout tower . The double chapel in the northeast corner is an art-historical feature. Two Romanesque chapels from the 15th century are arranged one above the other and connected to one another through an opening in the ceiling. Both chapels, one of which is dedicated to Saint Valentine and one to Saint Martin (created by Bartlmä Firtaler ), contain remarkable carved statues and vault paintings by the South Tyrolean artist Simon von Taisten .

additional

In the Dellach district of Stein, next to Steiner Strasse, there is a brick replica of Stein Castle as a model.
