history

owner

The Seigneurie Villers had been owned by the Le Tirant family since the 14th century at the latest. Its members were vassals of the lords of La Roche-Guyon . In a contract from 1320, Jean Le Tirant was the first family member to be mentioned in a document. When Achille Le Tirant died in 1624, he left Villers to his firstborn son Samuel. His marriage to Aymée de Saint Just had two children: his son of the same name, Samuel, and his daughter, Aymée. Samuel succeeded his father as Seigneur von Villers. Since he died in 1668 without leaving children, he was inherited by his sister. After her death around 1672, the rule and castle passed to her cousin Jean Le Tirant. Through his son of the same name Villers came to Jean's grandson Louis, who was a knight of the Ordre royal et militaire de Saint-Louis . His only son and heir, Jean Achille René Romain, succeeded his father as the castle owner around 1738. He sold the castle, seigneurie and associated lands on September 20, 1763 to Pierre Louis René Cahouet. He sold it on February 20, 1778 to Jean Louis Loiseau de Berenger. From him the property came in 1783 to Pierre-Victor Roger de Gadancourt, who bought it for his son Alexandre François Roger de Berville. The new lord of the castle called himself Roger de Villers after his property. His family is still the owner of the complex today.

Building history

Villers-en-Arthies Castle was built at the beginning of the 17th century by the La Tirant family on the site of a previous building. The western side wing of the complex stands on older foundations, the thickness of which suggests that a fortified structure previously stood at this location. When exactly the castle was built and who the client was, is currently unknown.

description

The castle stands on the highest point of the village and consists of a seven-axis corps de logis with two floors, which are joined at right angles by two three-story, short side wings. The roofs are covered with slate . On the upper floor of the Corps de Logis, narrow and wider windows alternate. This principle is also reflected in the dormer windows on the top floor, where large and small windows alternate. The individual floors of the building are separated from one another by cornices . Pilasters ensure that the facades are structured vertically. A straight path, around 500 meters long, leads to the main entrance on the south side. It is the remainder of an access avenue , the middle section of which is still lined with old linden trees. Elms used to stand on the edges of their southern area, but they were felled in 1939. Halfway through the path, a wrought-iron gate with the coat of arms of Alexandre François Roger de Villersʼ. The gate used to be at the southern end of the access avenue.

In the 28  hectare large castle park , the remains of a former find ice cellar . There is also a small garden temple, which was built in 1790 by Count Alexandre François Roger de Villers in memory of his first wife. On the architrave of the porch supported by four Tuscan columns is the Latin inscription Optimæ Conjugi ( German for  the best wife ). The construction was on 18 March 1999 under monument protection provided.
