The zinnia angustifolia ( Zinnia angustifolia ) is a plant of the genus Zinnia ( Zinnia ) in the family of Compositae (Asteraceae).

features

The narrow-leaved zinnia is an annual plant that reaches heights of 25 to 40 centimeters. The leaves are linear-lanceolate, measure 20 to 70 × 4 to 8 millimeters and are about seven times as long as they are wide. The flower heads have a diameter of 3.5 to 5 centimeters. The black-red disc- shaped flowers have bald tips and thick, blunt and recurved tips. The ray-flowers are orange-yellow with a yellow central stripe. The fruit has an awn .

The flowering period extends from July to September.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 22.

Occurrence

The narrow-leaved zinnia is found on pastures in the northern and western Mexican highlands . On Hispaniola the species is a neophyte.

Systematics

One can distinguish between two varieties:

  • Zinnia angustifolia var. Angustifolia : It comes in the Mexican states of Chihuahua, Durango, San Luis Potosi, Sinaloa, Sonora, Zacatecas, Aguascalientes, Guanajuato, Jalisco, Michoacan and Nayarit ago.
  • Zinnia angustifolia var. Greggii (BL Rob. & Greenm.) McVaugh : It occurs in the Mexican states of Durango, Sinaloa, Jalisco, Michoacan and Nayarit.

Synonyms

  • Zinnia angustifolia Kunth has the synonym Zinnia linearis Benth.

The narrow-leaved zinnia is widely used as an ornamental plant for summer flower beds and borders and as a cut flower. It has been in culture since 1887 at the latest. There are several varieties.
