Friedrich Schmidt-Bleek
Friedrich Schmidt-Bleek (born July 16, 1932 in Bandung on Java , Indonesia ; † June 26, 2019 in Berlin ), nicknamed "Bio", was a German nuclear and physical chemist and environmental researcher.
At the end of the 1970s he was responsible for the development of the German Chemicals Act at the Federal Environment Agency in Berlin . In the 1990s he headed the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy together with Ernst Ulrich von Weizsäcker , and later he was President of the Factor 10 Institute in Carnoules ( France ).
Schmidt-Bleek researched resource productivity and dematerialization , introduced the term ecological rucksack and developed the unit of material input per service unit (MIPS) as a fundamental measure for evaluating the environmental impact of a product .
Life
Schmidt-Bleek studied chemistry at the University of Bonn (diploma in 1958), went to the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry and received his doctorate in nuclear physics at the University of Mainz in 1960 . He then worked as a postdoc with Nobel Prize winner Frank Sherwood Rowland at the University of Kansas , then until 1974 as a faculty member at the US universities in Kansas and Purdue and Tennessee . He later served as the founding director of the Appalachian Resources Project and Environment Center at the University of Tennessee .
In Germany, Schmidt-Bleek played a key role in developing the environmental research plan , the environmental specimen bank and the Chemicals Act in the 1970s . In the 1980s he held senior positions at the OECD and the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA).
From 1991 to 1997 Schmidt-Bleek was founding vice-president of the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy , later founding president of the Factor 10 Institute and the International Factor 10 Club. He developed the factor 10 model for dematerialization and a corresponding metric (ecological rucksack 1994, MIPS 1998).
He held teaching positions at several universities and published around 400 scientific papers and 20 books. In 2009, at the suggestion of Schmidt-Bleek, the World Resources Forum Davos was founded.
His son Friedrich is a gynecologist.
